Social
Media an Addiction?
Around
the globe, many of the population believe that social media is an addiction in
today’s society, including me. I do believe we are constantly connected to our
phones, one way or another. Sadly, without our phones we feel lost. There are
many times I do not know what to do if I did not have my phone on me. It is
like an addiction. We are so engaged in what is happening on social media, like
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to name a few, instead of what is going on
within our world. We are so dependent on our phones and what others are dong
with themselves it is hard to focus on general issues and problems when we can
even fix ourselves.
Of
course, people have the ability to look at their phones and social media
whenever, but the issues comes to when is it really necessary? I cannot keep
count on how many times I see people on their phones while driving. They
usually are on their devices, texting, or even scrolling while at the
stoplight. Not only does it put danger in themselves but others around them. Most
states have even made it illegal now to be on a cell phone while behind the
wheel.
Another
reason why social media is an addiction is due to the fact that we do not want
to fall behind on a topic or issue, especially if it is viral. People are
paranoid on missing out on a discussion and also being able to voice an opinion
on it. This proves why we are constantly refreshing the page and seeing
anything unique or different happening around us.
Lastly,
having these portable social media apps that we can take anywhere with us is a
threat to all of us. With all the consequences it has, we still ignore the
effects it has on us. If there was a way to reach out to let others know what
the real damage it does, it can really change the outlook on this addiction.
Hi Hunter! I looked over your micro theme and I have to say I thing you make a very relevant point. I agree with what you're saying about social media and how it's thriving on the attention we as a society are feeding it. Going through the paper I caught a few minor mistakes I know Dr. Kyburz will definitely catch. The first one is the essential question you need to include somewhere in your first paragraph. You have to identify whether or not your writing about the cause of addiction to social media, or the consequences of it. Once you figure out your question, you can write about your inquiries pertaining to that question. The other thing I caught on to was that a lot of your sentences have comma splices or run-on characteristics. What that means is some of your sentences are too long or have to many commas. Try to break down your sentences and avoid excessive comma usage. I don't want to sound like the Grammar Nazi of the class but I'm sure it will save you valuable points if you handle those corrections before your final revision. Overall, good job!
