Documentary Project

What Did I Just watch?!

Documentaries! These films fascinate me because I am always intrigued to hear the truth, not something the media fabricates or exaggerates on. I would say I have seen several films that range in all different categories from food to animals to life in other cultures. If I were to count I would say at most five. My favorite documentary I have seen so far would be Food Inc. This documentary shows the real truth behind our food we purchase at our local grocery stores. This story explained to the consumer just how terrible the large corporations treat our animals before killing it for us to eat.

The most recent documentary I watched, which was also for my documentary project, was Blackfish. Before watching this film I thought what could be wrong with Sea World and Sea Land? Is it really that bad? After watching the film, it touched me in so many ways that are unimaginable. Never will I visit Sea World or Sea Land, any of those kinds of amusement attractions again. These poor animals are hunted and torn away from their families in the wild at such a young age. By watching this story, it explains that the Killer Whale stays with its mother and family through its whole life. Researchers claim that each family of whales has its own language and the whales have a part of the brain that humans lack. This part of the whale's brain enables the mammal to have a high emotional state of mind therefore causing trauma not only to this small baby whale but to it's family. Not only are these poor animals ripped away from their families, they are tortured, starved and enslaved in a small holding tank so we humans can entertain ourselves by watching them do tricks!  We are paying big companies to watch this  marine animal jump and get us wet. I thought we were more educated than that.

This documentary shows animals and marine life should not be taken from the wild. It ruins their entire lives, from being locked up, taken away from their families, and put into a small habitat space to live in.  Not only that, but it also impacts them mentally. Not knowing where they are, and usually all alone can make someone go mad and yet we blame the animals when they go on a rampage hurting and killing.  How can we blame the human for ruining these animals emotional stability?  Overall, these types of environments and facilities should be banned for their lack of cleanliness, non-experienced staff, and unhealthy living environment for the animals and marine life.

Below is a photo of one of  Sea Worlds widely known Killer Whale Tilikum. 1/3 of his life is to preform in a short social environment with his staff and viewers watching. He comes out during the show to preform this pose and after to be put back into his small holdings area until the next show.
